Guts

Recently I talked about how most films in Hollywood use only 2 colors, teal and orange. The sad fact is that the lack of creativity in color grading is almost a metaphore for what’s really going on in the mighty hills of California. We see more and more sequels and remakes in theatre. A geniune good movie is hard to find and more and more people are moving on to the more ‘arthouse’ type of movies. But I’m not going to talk about that, I’m going to talk about the few GOOD movies you might not have spotted throughout the past years. I’m going to talk about the few directors with the guts to pull off a movie against mainstream pressure!

A Single Man – God knows I was sceptical about this movie, the trailer didn’t tell you anything what to expect but then again, that’s just the beauty of it! Had a conversation lately with my friend Sarah, who has a lovely blog, be sure to check it out! We asked ourselfs: How many times have you walked out of a movie theatre and thought “All the good parts were in the trailer, this was absolutely rubbish..” ? I can recall many times! Anyway, I was sceptical about it and it took me a while before I actually saw it and I can’t tell you enough how stunning this movie is. Colin Firth is one hell of an actor and I’m ashamed to admit I never saw him act before. Yes, I haven’t seen Bridget Jones’ Diary, but that’s not the point right now :D This is the movie you want to see if you want a compelling story about loss, set in the awesome sixties! I’m being vague on purpose here, you shouldn’t know to much about this movie, just go and watch it…you won’t regret it.

Black Swan – This movie is a tricky one, throughout the entire movie I kept on thinking how absurd and crazy it is. Not exactly 100% my cup of tea but a creative movie nonetheless! Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis are at the top of their game but unfortunately I wasn’t really absorbed into the storyline. The story resolves around a frigid girl, competing to be the Swan Queen in the next ballet show. Perhaps that’s why I wasn’t into it, I couldn’t care less about ballet. But that’s not a valid argument for not putting it in my collection, my personal feeling about ballet shouldn’t stop anyone from seeing it, just give it a chance.

Mr. Nobody – Just being a proud Belgian here! Jaco Van Dormael, a belgian director, made this movie back in 2009. It’s a movie about choice and the inevitable effect it has on the course of life. Philosophical ? Yeah, pretty much. It’s the kind of movie you want to see for a second time, just to see if you missed essential pieces of the puzzle along the ride. I personally loved everything about it, the effects, the camera angles, the actors, the storylines. Yes, that’s a plural, there is more than one storyline in it!

The Disappearance of Alice Creed – I saw this movie last summer, at the Ostend Filmfestival where the director was an honored guest. Don’t let the trailer fool you, there’s more to it than you can imagine. The director, Jake Blakeson, actually wrote the whole script on his own, along the way keeping things low-budget. We have 3 rooms, 3 persons and that’s all it needs to keep you at the top of your seat! It’s not as mind-blowing as the previously mentioned films but really worth mentioning!

Buried – This one hit every major theatre but deserves a lot more credit than it’s been given. Buried is a crazy, claustrophobic, nail-biting thriller with just 1 actor in 1 way too small space! A fresh breeze in a land filled with torture scenes…yeah, I’m talking to you, Saw!

So…that’s it! If you have any suggestions, just put it in the comments section below and I’ll get into it! I’m always eager to see a new movie! It does not necessarily have to be from Hollywood, just say whatever comes in mind! :)
